Tomorrow is Father's Day. This is my tribute to all Dads, young and old. Most of these songs are from the point of view of the sons and daughters (He Didn't Have To Be, Mi Viejo, Desperados Waitin' for a Train, etc.), but some are from the point of view of the Dad (With Arms Wide Open, Forever Young, Heaven) to keep things balance and in perspective. Happy Father's Day to all Dads everywhere.
01. Brad Paisley - He Didn't Have to Be
Lookin' back all I can say / About all the things he did for me / Is I hope I'm at least half the dad / That he didn't have to be
02. Piero - Mi Viejo
Viejo mi querido viejo / Ahora ya caminas lerdo / Como perdonando el viento / Yo soy tu sangre mi viejo / Soy tu silencio y tu tiempo
03. Highwaymen - Desperados Waiting for a Train
I played the Red River Valley / He'd sit in the kitchen and cry / Run his fingers through seventy years of livin'
And wonder, "Lord, why has every well I've drilled gone dry?" / We were friends, me and this old man
04. Creed - With Arms Wide Open
Well I don't know if I'm ready / To be the man I have to be / I'll take a breath, I'll take her by my side / We stand in awe / we've created life
05. Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle
Well, he came from college just the other day / So much like a man I just had to say, / "Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?" / He shook his head, and he said with a smile, / "What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys / See you later. Can I have them please?" / My boy was just like me /
06. Cat Stevens - Father and Son
07. Mike + the Mechanics - In the Living Years
I wasn't there that morning / When my father passed away / I didn't get to tell him / All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit / Later that same year / I'm sure I heard his echo / In my baby's new born tears
/ I just wish I could have told him in the living years
08. Luther Vandross - Dance with my Father
"If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him / I'd play a song that would never, ever
end."
09. Will Smith - Just the Two of Us
Then to my knees and I begged the lord please / Let me be a good daddy all he needs / Love knowledge discipline too / I pledge my life to you
10. Bob Carlile - Butterfly Kisses
But I remember / Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done something right to deserve her love every morning and butterfly kisses at night.
11. Eric Clapton - My Father's Eyes
Where do I find the words to say? How do I teach him? What do we play? Bit by bit, I've realized
That's when I need them, That's when I need my father's eyes.
12. Cliff Richards - Daddy's Home
Your best friend's around told me / You had teardrops in your eyes / Daddy's home / Daddy's home to stay.
13. Holly Dunn - My Father's Hands
I remember Daddy´s hands, folded silently in prayer / And reaching out to hold me, when I had a nightmare./ You could read quite a story, in the callouses and lines / Years of work and worry had left their mark behind / I remember Daddy´s hands, how they held my Mama tight / And patted my back, for something done right. / There are things that I´ve forgotten, that I loved about the man, / But I´ll always remember the love in Daddy´s hands.
14. Paul Simon - Father and Daughter
I'm gonna watch you shine / Gonna watch you grow / Gonna paint a sign / So you'll always know / As long as one and one is two / There could never be a father / Who loved his daughter more than I love you
15. Rod Stewart - Forever Young
And when you finally fly away / I'll be hoping that I served you well / For all the wisdom of a lifetime / No one can ever tell
16. Madonna - Papa, Don't Preach
You always taught me right from wrong / I need your help, daddy please be strong / I may be young at heart / But I know what I'm saying
17. Barry Manilow - Ships
We walked to the sea. / Just my father and me. / And the dogs played around on the sand. / Winter cold cut the air.
Hangin' still everywhere. / Dressed in gray, did he say. Hold my hand.
18. Warrant - Heaven
I don't need to be the king of the world / As long as I'm the hero of this little girl / Heaven isn't too far away
Closer to it every day / No matter what your friends might say
19. Dan Fogelberg - The Leader of the Band
"My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man / I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."
20. Karla Bonoff - Daddy's Little Girl
"When I look in the face of the child, I see you in her eyes / And we're all so much the same / We'll carry on your name."
